What is a reasonable price?

As hard as this is to believe, I know more vendors who do not charge enough for their services than those who overcharge. So many people who work in the wedding industry do so because they love to make people happy.
I got a call from a potential client who left a message on my phone. She had called me previously to see about booking my services for a Holiday party and wanted a quote. She called back a week latter to inform me that she had booked another DJ that was more reasonably priced. This particular client was a guest at 50th wedding anniversary party where I was performing about a month earlier. I am guessing she just found the other DJ online never had a chance to see him in action. If so, then how in the world does she know the other DJ is more reasonably priced?

The biggest misperception out there is all Disc Jockeys are the same, and the cheaper DJ is the better value. If all food were the same, why wouldn’t we all serve McDonald’s for important catered events? After all, it is the cheapest and you get the same results, right? McDonald’s is reasonably priced for fast food, but we do not serve fast food for important events like weddings or Holiday parties.

Disc Jockey service is a talent based business, and it is also a personalized service not a commodity. Reasonably priced means that there is a reason why an item or a service is priced the way it is. If a DJ could charge more for their services, don’t you think they would? Ruth’s Chris costs much more than McDonald’s, Why? Better quality, better service. Yet both are reasonably priced for what you get.

Quality costs more! If you are planning an important event like a wedding, remember this is a get-what-you -pay-for business. Do your homework, compare apples to apples and find the best value for your money, and what will work best for your event. If that client I talked about at the beginning of this post, actually seen this other DJ perform live at an event, and performed equally, yet will charge her much less, congratulations, and more power to you.
Something tells me that is not the case. The DJ you choose is a representation of you. If he or she performs poorly do not blame the DJ, just go back and look at the price you paid. You may need to blame yourself. So what is a reasonable price? Answer; A reasonable price is the price you pay that is equal to the service rendered.

Referral Kickbacks? Beware!

Definition:
Kickbacks – Slang, A return of a percentage of a sum
of money already received, typically as a result of
pressure, coercion, or a secret agreement.

There are thousands of DJ’s out there to choose from.

The best way to narrow your search is by getting references.
By now you probably have a location picked out for your
reception. Most cases the venue coordinator will have a list of
preferred vendors.

But before you take their word for it, ask the coordinator
what the criteria is to be on the list. Just because there
on the list doesn’t always mean your getting a quality vendor.

Many coordinators receive kickbacks from vendors to make
the list. I’ve personally seen DJ companies paying out these
kickbacks.
At many of the locations I’ve performed at, I’ve seen the on-site
coordinator leave right after dinner is served. How do the know
the outcome and success the the event?
There are some venue coordinators out there that do take pride in
what they do, and care about the outcome of your wedding.

This is not limited to just on-site coordinators.

Photographers work side by side with DJ’s through most of the
night, and love to work with great DJ’s. It makes for great
pictures (memories). Most photographers will recommend DJ’s
based on their performance. Experienced photographers know
who the better DJ’s are.
Yet I have known a few photographers that have receive kickbacks
too. The best way to be sure, is to ask several other wedding
professionals about the reputation and performance of the DJ
you have in mind.
